Long Beach Parks, Recreation and Marine Celebrates Parks Make Life Better® Month

Long Beach, CA ~ Long Beach, CA - The City of Long Beach Department of Parks, Recreation and Marine (PRM) is celebrating Parks Make Life Better® Month this July. This month-long recognition, led by the California Parks and Recreation Society (CPRS), highlights the crucial role that parks and recreation play in creating healthy, connected, and thriving communities.

Under the leadership of Mayor Rex Richardson, the city is honoring the dedicated professionals who make these spaces welcoming and accessible. The Long Beach Parks, Recreation and Marine department plays a vital role in helping the community live healthier, happier, and more connected lives.

PRM is responsible for maintaining hundreds of parks, open spaces, and recreation facilities that enrich the physical, mental, and social wellness of Long Beach residents. This includes 166 parks, 81 playgrounds, nine skate parks, five golf courses, three community pools, 69 tennis courts, 24 pickleball courts, nearly 300 acres of nature preserves and wetlands. Additionally, PRM offers over 2,800 recreation classes and programs each year to ensure people of all ages and interests have opportunities to play, learn and enjoy the outdoors.

The department also takes care of seven scenic beaches spanning over six miles of shoreline. It operates the largest municipally run marina system in the country with more than 3,350 boat slips across three marinas. PRM also includes Long Beach Animal Care Services which provides support services to enrich the wellbeing of people and pets in Long Beach.

Director of Parks Recreation and Marine Stephen P. Scott stated that as a department they witness every day how parks and recreation uplifts their community. By providing safe places for residents to be active, opportunities to connect with neighbors,and moments of peace in nature,the Long Beach Parks Recreationand Marine enriches the physical mentaland social wellbeingofthe community.

To recognize July as Parks Make Life Better® Month,the Mayor RichardsonandtheLongBeachCityCouncilwillholdameetingonTuesday,July21st. Community members are encouraged to attend the meeting at City Hall (411 W. Ocean Blvd.) at 5 p.m. to show their support.

In honor of this month-long celebration, PRM is encouraging the community to participate in various activities such as attending summer events like Movies in the Park, Long Beach Municipal Band concerts, or El Dorado Nature Center concerts. A full list of summer events and activities can be found on the City Events Calendar or lbcity.info/lbsummer.

Residents are also encouraged to visit a neighborhood park, beach, nature trail, or other open space throughout the month. Additionally, they can take advantage of over 700 summer recreation classes offered by Recreation Connection for all ages, abilities and interests.
