CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Rezul -- Homeowners associations (HOAs) are required to hold meetings throughout the year, whether that is the annual meeting, board meetings, or special sessions. Most of these meetings are open to all HOA members, and they are encouraged to attend, especially when decisions are being made, or new leadership is being voted on. Kuester Management Group has released a statement to the press regarding why homeowners should make an effort to attend meetings whenever possible.
"Attending an HOA meeting in person – or virtually – allows you to stay on top of changes that are being made within the community and to hear how the board came to these decisions," says Bryan Kuester, President of Kuester Management Group. "You are able to discern a lot more details than simply reading meeting minutes. You get to hear different points of view and arguments for or against certain decisions as well."

Members also have the opportunity to get involved during meetings through the open comments portion, says Kuester. Homeowners can sign up to speak and share their thoughts, ideas, opinions, or concerns in front of the board and other members. This can be the first step toward initiating positive change.
Attendance is also crucial for achieving quorum. This is the minimum number of members that need to be present for an official meeting to take place and decisions to be made. Quorum is also required for voting to take place, whether electing new board members or passing a change in policy. Members can permit someone else to vote on their behalf through a proxy, but being there in person is encouraged.
"Meetings are a great place to meet your neighbors as well and get to know the board," says Kuester. "It can inspire you to run for a leadership position or join a committee in order to get more involved and be a part of what is happening in the community. You can stay up-to-date on current projects as well as those coming down the pipeline."
