Juneau: USACE and CBJ to Host Multiagency Community Flood Preparedness Event

~ Juneau residents are being urged to take part in a flood preparedness event this Saturday, July 11, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Dimond Park. The event, which is being hosted by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers – Alaska District and the City and Borough of Juneau, aims to educate and equip community members for the upcoming glacial lake outburst flooding (GLOF) season in 2026.

Attendees will have the opportunity to learn about various flood preparation techniques such as sandbag filling and placement, pumping, and other general flood risk reduction measures. Information will also be available on the CBJ pump plan, evacuation mapping, reducing flood risk to homes, and recommendations for actions to take before and during a GLOF event.

In addition, residents can pick up pre-filled or unfilled sandbags for personal use on both July 11 and July 12 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Those in need can load and haul as many sandbags as necessary. The organizers are also seeking volunteers to help fill and deploy sandbags for the community.

Representatives from various organizations including the U.S. Coast Guard, Tlingit and Haida Indian Tribes, U.S. Forest Service, National Weather Service, Alaska Department of Transportation, Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation, and the American Red Cross will be present at the event to provide information and resources.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is currently utilizing its expertise and authorities to implement flood risk reduction measures that will provide additional protection this year in addition to the immediate actions already taken. Juneau residents are encouraged to attend this important event in order to prepare themselves for potential flooding events in the future.
