Juneau: Typo Identified in Proposition A Summary on 2026 Regular Election Ballot

~ ### Juneau says ballot typo won't affect temporary sales tax vote

The City and Borough of Juneau says a typo in the summary for Proposition A on the October 2026 ballot will not change how the proposed sales tax extension is applied.

The summary omits the word "services" from a description of the temporary 3% areawide sales tax. The ballot question asks voters whether to extend the tax for five years, with "Yes" and "No" options.

City officials said the tax has applied to both goods and services under Juneau's sales tax code since 1983. The word "services" also appears in the title of the legislation, Ordinance 2026-13, and in the code governing the tax.

"This is a truly unfortunate typo that should have been caught and corrected during the legislative process, before ballots were printed and distributed last month," City Manager Katie Koester said. She said the city wanted to notify voters promptly and assure them the error would not affect their vote.

If approved, the extension would continue the existing tax beginning July 1, 2027, for five years. Juneau's Uniform Sales Tax Code applies the tax to retail sales, rentals and services performed in the borough, subject to exemptions, including a recently adopted exemption for essential food and utilities.

After the error was reported by a member of the public on Oct. 1, city staff reviewed the ballot-language process. They also found the same omission in the summary for the 2021 renewal. The city said that renewal was implemented according to the tax code, and the 2026 extension would be handled the same way.
