Juneau: As Marine Park Reconstruction Continues, Walkway Opens and Terrace Closes

Rezul News/10739974
~ Juneau, Alaska - The Marine Park Rebuild project, which began in April of this year, has reached a significant milestone with the opening of the park's decorative walkway. This walkway connects the Downtown Seawalk to the Merchants Wharf plaza and will be open for pedestrian traffic and emergency access throughout the summer season.

The City and Borough of Juneau's contractor for this project, Dawson Construction LLC, has completed the first phase of construction and has moved fencing to incorporate the rest of the job site. However, pedestrians should take note that more areas of Marine Park will be closed starting Wednesday, July 8th.

The Marine Park Rebuild project is set to be completed in April 2027 and will include various improvements such as an inlay of formline salmon designed by Rico Worl, a covered seating area and performing arts stage, two permanent vendor kiosks, and a children's play area. Currently, contractors have finished demolition on part of the park and will now move on to demolishing and setting concrete for the rest of the park.

This project was initiated in 2023 after receiving over 1000 public survey responses and holding several public meetings to gather local feedback. The Marine Park Rebuild is being funded entirely by Marine Passenger Fees, which are constitutionally restricted to financing projects that benefit cruise ships and their passengers.

For more information on the Marine Park Rebuild project, visit bit.ly/MarineParkProject or contact CBJ Parks & Recreation at 907-586-5226 with any questions. As construction continues throughout the summer season, visitors are advised to stay updated on any closures or changes in access to Marine Park.
