Idaho: Public events set to honor the life of Governor Dirk Kempthorne

Boise, Idaho ~ Boise, Idaho - The Governor's Office released an update today on the upcoming public events to commemorate the life and service of former Governor Dirk Kempthorne, who passed away on April 24 at the age of 74.

On Friday, May 15 at 10 a.m., Governor Kempthorne's body will be transferred with honor to the Idaho State Capitol. The arrival will be marked by a tribute from the Idaho National Guard and Idaho State Police. The Capitol service will be presided over by current Governor Brad Little, with Idaho Secretary of State Phil McGrane serving as Master of Ceremonies.

Following the Capitol service, Governor Kempthorne's body will lie in state in the Capitol Rotunda until Saturday, May 16 at 10 a.m. This tradition allows for members of the public to pay their respects to the late governor.

On Saturday, May 16 at 10 a.m., Governor Kempthorne's body will be transferred from the Capitol Rotunda to the Cathedral of the Rockies located at 717 N. 11th St. in Boise. The funeral service will begin at 11 a.m. and is open to the public. After the funeral service, a procession led by family and invited guests along with Idaho State Police will make its way to the Idaho State Veterans Cemetery for an interment ceremony.

A celebration of life ceremony will also take place in Washington D.C. at a later date.

In honor of Governor Kempthorne, Governor Little has ordered all U.S. and State of Idaho flags to be lowered to half-staff until sunrise on Sunday, May 17th when they will be raised back up to full staff.
