Rezul News/10722847
IDAHO FALLS ~ Early this morning, on December 14th, the Idaho Falls Fire Department was called to respond to a vegetation fire at the Hatch Pit located at East 33rd North and Recycle Road. According to dispatch, the call came in around 2:44 a.m. reporting flames that were approximately 20 feet tall coming from the site.

Upon arrival, fire crews discovered that the fire was actually burning in a large pallet and wood pile rather than the active trash pit. The cause of the fire is currently unknown.

The burning pile covers an area of about 1 acre and stands at a height of 10 to 12 feet. Underneath the surface layer of chipped wood, or duff, is estimated to be between 2 to 4 feet deep. In order to keep the fire contained to one pile, crews are working closely with landfill personnel.

Five units and one battalion chief from Idaho Falls Fire responded to the scene. Mutual aid was also provided by one water tender unit each from Ucon Fire and Bonneville County Fire. As of now, crews remain on site with their main objective being to prevent the fire from spreading through the duff layer or reaching nearby exposures.

Updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
