As wildfires continue to ravage parts of Idaho and the Intermountain West, the Idaho Falls Fire Department is acknowledging the tireless efforts of firefighters and emergency personnel who are working around the clock to protect lives, homes, and natural resources. The department is also reminding residents to prepare for wildfire season and take necessary precautions to protect themselves from wildfire smoke.

The response to major wildfires requires a coordinated effort that goes beyond the boundaries of a single community. Local, regional, state, and federal agencies work together by sharing resources such as firefighters, engines, aircrafts, incident management teams, and specialized equipment. The Idaho Falls Fire Department has deployed its own firefighters through the Idaho Department of Lands under established mutual aid agreements. The department is reimbursed for personnel, apparatus, and other eligible response costs.

Deputy Chief Paul Radford expressed pride in being part of a fire service that supports one another when communities are threatened. He stated that the courage, dedication, and teamwork displayed during these incidents help protect lives, property, and Idaho's natural landscapes.

Apart from directly impacting communities where they occur, wildfires can also affect areas hundreds of miles away through smoke. Depending on weather patterns and wind conditions, smoke from fires burning elsewhere in the state or region can reduce air quality in eastern Idaho.

Residents are advised to monitor local air quality reports and health advisories. They should limit prolonged or strenuous outdoor activity when smoke levels are high and keep windows and doors closed when outdoor air quality is poor. Using the recirculate setting on home and vehicle air conditioning systems is also recommended when possible. Activities that contribute to indoor air pollution should be avoided during periods of heavy smoke.

The department urges individuals with asthma or other respiratory conditions to follow their healthcare provider's guidance during this time.

While eastern Idaho has not experienced the same level of wildfire activity as other parts of the state this season, the department is encouraging residents to prepare for the worst. They recommend knowing at least two evacuation routes from their neighborhood, designating a meeting location outside the area in case family members become separated, and keeping emergency contact information readily available.

Residents are also advised to ensure their address is clearly visible from the street for emergency responders and to prepare an emergency kit with essential supplies such as water, non-perishable food, medications, important documents, flashlights, batteries, chargers, and more. A plan for pets and livestock should also be in place in case evacuation becomes necessary.

The Idaho Falls Fire Department also wants to remind residents that preventing human-caused wildfires is one of the most effective ways to protect communities and natural resources. They urge people to follow local fire restrictions, properly dispose of smoking materials, avoid parking vehicles on dry vegetation, and use extra caution with equipment that may produce sparks.
