~ Idaho Falls City Council Approves 2027 Budget, Focusing on Community Investments

In a unanimous decision, the Idaho Falls City Council has approved the budget for the upcoming fiscal year. The budget, totaling $393.5 million, will continue to prioritize investments in community assets and infrastructure.

Mayor Lisa Burtenshaw highlighted the unique aspects of Idaho Falls' budget compared to other cities. "What sets our budget apart is the sheer number of assets and services we offer to residents," she stated. These include police and fire protection, a parks system, a library, as well as city-owned and operated entities such as a power company, fiber company, airport, and water, sewer, and sanitation utilities.

A significant portion of the budget, approximately $17 million, will go towards priority community infrastructure projects. These include improvements to Rollandet Avenue and other streets, new police vehicles, development of Meppen Park, upgrades to zoo facilities, conversion of a railroad bridge into a pathway, and pathway lighting in Heritage Park.

While property taxes are an important part of the budget, they only make up less than 17% of the city's revenues. These funds support general fund operations such as police, fire, parks and recreation, public works, mayor/council offices, and the library.

The majority of the city's revenue (50%) comes from enterprise departments that operate like stand-alone businesses. These departments generate their own revenue through service charges and user fees. They include Idaho Falls Power, Idaho Falls Fiber, Idaho Falls Regional Airport, as well as water, sewer and sanitation utilities.

Mayor Burtenshaw emphasized that city officials are constantly working to ensure that these assets and investments benefit the true owners of the city - its residents. She encouraged residents to review the City's annual Budget Book for more information on how their tax dollars are being utilized.

With this approved budget in place for 2027, the City of Idaho Falls is well-positioned to continue providing essential services and investing in the community's future.
