Governor Polis Pardons Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid in Colorado's Third Annual Turkey Pardon, Emphasizes Importance of Supporting Colorado Agriculture and Families in Need This Holiday Season
Rezul News/10720031
DENVER ~ Denver, CO - In a heartwarming gesture ahead of the Thanksgiving holiday, Governor Jared Polis exercised his power as granted by the Colorado constitution to pardon two turkeys from Jodar Farms. The turkeys, named Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, were saved from the dinner table and will now live out their days at Luvin Arms sanctuary.
The Governor was joined by First Gentleman Marlon Reis, Lt. Governor Dianne Primavera, Commissioner of Agriculture Kate Greenberg, as well as FFA Colorado State Officers, 4-H Members, and Gold Star families in honor of Veterans Day. This event not only celebrated the spirit of Thanksgiving but also highlighted Colorado's agricultural heritage and history.
During his speech, Governor Polis emphasized the importance of giving back to the community and supporting local farmers and ranchers who work tirelessly to provide delicious and healthy food for families during the holiday season. He encouraged Coloradans to reflect on what they are grateful for and find ways to support their neighbors in need.
Commissioner Greenberg also spoke about the struggles faced by many families in accessing food due to federal cuts in the SNAP program. She expressed pride in helping Governor Polis kick off a food drive that will run from November 10-14. The donated food will be given to Village Exchange Center, who will distribute it to Colorado families.

The two turkeys pardoned at this event weighed 22lbs each and came from Jodar Farms in Fort Collins. Known for providing quality products to some of the best restaurants in Fort Collins, Jodar Farms had previously provided a turkey named Fred for pardon in 2024. After being pardoned by Governor Polis, Butch Cassidy and Sundance Kid were transported to Luvin Arms sanctuary where they will join other rescued animals.
These two turkeys were named after a vote by Coloradans on the Governor's social media pages. As a special treat, they were also given a night's stay at the Governor's Mansion, following in the footsteps of previous pardoned turkeys.
In addition to the turkey pardon, the event also served as a food drive to support Colorado families facing threats to food access ahead of Thanksgiving. The Governor's office will be accepting donations from November 10-14 at the State Capitol. The Colorado Department of Agriculture's seasonal maps can also help Coloradans shop locally for produce, meats, and other products this holiday season.
As Coloradans gather around their tables this Thanksgiving, they are reminded of the important role agriculture plays in making it all possible. This event not only celebrated the spirit of giving but also highlighted the need to support local farmers and ranchers who ensure food security in the state. With this gesture, Governor Polis and his team have set an example for others to follow in giving back to their communities during this holiday season.
