~ In a recent announcement, Governor Greg Abbott praised the 33 public institutions of higher education in Texas for being awarded the 2025 Veteran Education Excellence Recognition Award by the Texas Veterans Commission (TVC). This prestigious award, established by the Texas Legislature, recognizes universities and colleges that demonstrate excellence in education and related services for student veterans and military-connected students.

Governor Abbott expressed his gratitude to these institutions for their ongoing efforts to provide top-notch resources and support to the brave men and women who have served in the military. He emphasized the importance of education in a veteran's personal well-being and long-term quality of life, stating that Texans are forever indebted to our veterans and their families.

The TVC Chairwoman, Navy veteran Laura Koerner, also commended these universities and colleges for their commitment to ensuring that veterans and their dependents receive the quality education they have earned. She highlighted how these institutions create an environment that fosters academic success for veteran students.

The Veteran Education Excellence Recognition Award is presented at gold, silver, and bronze levels to showcase the range of services provided to veteran students and their families. Among this year's winners are 27 gold award recipients, four silver award recipients, and two bronze award recipients. An asterisk denotes the first year an institution has been recognized.

Some of the criteria evaluated by TVC include having a centralized place for student veterans to find assistance and information, a designated point of contact for veteran students, admissions policies specifically for veterans, new student orientation programs tailored to veterans' needs, academic support services, mental health resources, housing policies that apply to veterans, faculty training on issues affecting veteran students, career services for veterans, among others.

All public institutions of higher education in Texas were invited to apply for this recognition. The TVC advocates for veterans' rights and provides superior service to improve their quality of life. They assist with receiving benefits, provide funding to agencies offering direct services to veterans, and administer the Hazlewood Act education benefits.

The 33 Texas public institutions of higher education that have received this award have shown their dedication to supporting veteran students and their families. Their commitment to providing a wide range of services and resources has significantly contributed to the academic success of these students.
