~ Austin, Texas- Governor Greg Abbott has announced the appointment of Robert S. Howden as the 116th Secretary of State of Texas, effective July 18, 2026. Howden, who has served in four Republican governors' administrations, brings a wealth of experience and expertise to the role.

Governor Abbott expressed his confidence in Howden's abilities, stating that he has "served Texas with distinction" and will excel as Secretary of State. With his extensive background in the legislative process and public service, Howden is well-equipped to protect the integrity of Texas elections and represent the state on a global level.

As Chief Election Officer for Texas, the Secretary of State plays a crucial role in ensuring fair and uniform application of election laws throughout the state. They also serve as a repository for official business and commercial records and publish government rules and regulations. Additionally, they commission notaries public and are responsible for keeping the state seal and attesting to the Governor's signature on official documents.

In addition to these duties, the Secretary also serves as Senior Advisor and Liaison to the Governor for Texas Border and Mexican Affairs, as well as Chief International Protocol Officer for Texas.

Howden, who currently serves as Senior Advisor and Director of Legislative Affairs for the Office of the Governor, has an impressive background in both government and private sector roles. He previously worked as an independent legislative and public affairs consultant before joining Governor Rick Perry's administration as Communications Director and Senior Advisor. He also oversaw Perry's Task Force on Economic Development Growth.

Prior to his time with Perry's administration, Howden led the National Federation of Independent Business Texas. He also served on Governor Bill Clements' staff and at the Texas Department of Commerce. In addition to his professional accomplishments, Howden is actively involved in various organizations such as being a member of University of Texas (UT) Chancellor's Council Executive Committee, former Chairman of the Texas Exes Legislative Committee, and former member of the Texas Exes Board of Directors. He also serves on the Austin Club Board and has been involved with the Helping Hand Home for Children and the Austin Junior League Advisory Board.

Howden received his Bachelor of Science degree from UT at Austin, further demonstrating his dedication to serving the state of Texas. With his extensive experience and impressive background, Howden is poised to make a significant impact as the 116th Secretary of State.
