Governor Abbott Announces Texas' Intent To Opt In To Federal School Choice Tax Credit Program

Rezul News/10722554
~ In a recent announcement, Governor Greg Abbott revealed that Texas will be participating in the Federal Tax Credit Scholarship program, which was created by President Trump's One Big Beautiful Bill. This decision fulfills the state's commitment to providing education freedom to all families in Texas.

Governor Abbott expressed his gratitude towards President Trump for making this program possible, stating that generous Texans can now receive a tax credit for donations to a qualified scholarship granting organization. This will help minimize education expenses for families and give them the opportunity to choose the best educational setting for their child. The governor also emphasized that this partnership with the Trump administration will empower parents and ensure a stronger future for children in Texas.

The One Big Beautiful Bill offers a dollar-for-dollar federal tax credit of up to $1,700 per year for individual contributions to a qualified scholarship granting organization. Any excess credits can be carried forward for up to five years. Students from families with an income at or below 300% of the local median are eligible and can apply for scholarships through qualifying SGOs. These scholarships can be used towards tuition or other educational expenses at both public and private schools, including tutoring, transportation, and special needs services. It is important to note that states must opt-in to this program, which is set to begin in January 2027.

Earlier this year, Governor Abbott signed Senate Bill 2 into law, establishing the Texas Education Freedom Account (TEFA) program. This program allows eligible students to direct funding towards preapproved educational providers and services such as private school tuition, instructional materials, and educational therapies. With $1 billion in funding allocated for the 2026-2027 school year, TEFA will have the largest day-one launch in the country. More information on this program can be found on its official website.

With Texas opting into the Federal Tax Credit Scholarship program and implementing TEFA, it is clear that the state is committed to providing families with more options and opportunities when it comes to their children's education. This partnership between the state and federal government is a significant step towards ensuring a brighter future for the youth of Texas.
