Gov. Little signs Executive Order reinstating the Idaho Governor's Trophy and renewing the legendary football rivalry between Boise State and the University of Idaho

Boise, Idaho ~ Boise, Idaho - In a momentous event, Governor Brad Little was joined by University of Idaho President Scott Green and Boise State Interim President Jeremiah Shinn to sign Executive Order 2026-02, officially reinstating the historic rivalry between the two universities. The signing of this order marks the return of the Idaho Governor's Trophy, with the first game set to take place in 2031.
Governor Little expressed his excitement for the return of this great football tradition, stating that it not only brings together the state but also honors its history and showcases its best. He acknowledged that conference realignment and scheduling changes had put many historic rivalries on hold, including this one. However, he was thrilled to announce its recommissioning.
The announcement of the game was made jointly by both universities on Thursday morning. The highly anticipated matchup will take place at Albertsons Stadium on September 6th, 2031. Jeramiah Dickey, Boise State's Director of Athletics, expressed his gratitude for being able to host the Vandals at such an iconic location in Idaho. He also highlighted the importance of keeping resources and support within the state and showcasing both universities on a national level.

Terry Gawlik, Idaho's Director of Athletics, echoed Dickey's sentiments and emphasized how much this game means to both fan bases and the entire state. She thanked her staff for their hard work in making this happen and acknowledged Boise State's cooperation in finalizing the agreement.
This upcoming game will be the 41st installment of the in-state showdown between Boise State and Idaho. The last time these two teams faced off was on November 12th, 2010. With a current record of 22-17-1 against Idaho, including a 12-game winning streak, Boise State is looking forward to continuing their dominance over their rival.
The rivalry between these two teams dates back to 1971 when they were both members of the Big Sky Conference. Even after Boise State joined the FBS ranks in 1996, they continued to play each other for 15 consecutive seasons. This game will mark the second scheduled contest for Boise State in 2031, with a matchup against Memphis also on the books.

In addition to this highly anticipated game, Boise State is set to play another in-state opponent in 2030 when they host Idaho State on September 7th. This will be the second consecutive season that Boise State plays against an in-state team.
For Idaho, this game will be their first scheduled matchup for the 2031 season. The Vandals have played an in-state team every year since 2018 and have an annual rivalry with Idaho State for the iconic Potato State Trophy.
