Georgia: Gov. Kemp to Sen. Padilla: Stop Playing Politics With American Hero

Rezul News/10722746
ATLANTA ~ In a letter addressed to Senator Alex Padilla (D-Calif.), Governor Brian P. Kemp of Georgia has urged the senator to stop obstructing the confirmation of Lieutenant General Thomas "Tom" Carden as Vice Chief of the National Guard Bureau (NGB). Despite being nominated for the role more than five months ago, Gen. Carden has yet to receive a confirmation vote from the U.S. Senate due to a senatorial hold placed by Padilla.

Governor Kemp highlighted Gen. Carden's exceptional record and his 38 years of dedicated military service to the country in his letter, emphasizing that he is more than qualified for this critical national security role. He also pointed out that Padilla has not raised any concerns regarding Gen. Carden's fitness for the position, but has instead cited unrelated political reasons for his hold.

"During his 38 years of valued military service to our country, General Carden has given his life in faithful service to the State of Georgia and our nation, including during the unprecedented challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic," said Governor Kemp.

The role of Vice Chief of the National Guard Bureau is crucial as it assists the NGB chief in performing duties as a member of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and acts as a principal advisor on matters relating to the Guard. This includes advising top officials such as the war secretary, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Army secretary and chief, and Air Force secretary and chief.

Currently serving as Deputy Commander of U.S. Northern Command, Gen. Carden assists in anticipating, preparing for and responding to threats against North America and within its assigned area of responsibility. He also holds the position of Vice Commander at U.S. Element, North American Aerospace Defense Command.

Prior to these roles, Gen. Carden served as adjutant general for Georgia for five years where he oversaw all domestic and foreign activities of the Georgia Guard.

Governor Kemp's letter to Senator Padilla comes as a plea to withdraw his politically-driven hold on the confirmation process and to encourage all senators to publicly advocate for Gen. Carden. With his extensive experience and dedication to serving the country, Gen. Carden is more than capable of fulfilling the responsibilities of Vice Chief of the National Guard Bureau and making valuable contributions to national security.
