Georgia: Gov. Kemp: Special Tax Refunds Begin Issuing
Rezul News/10734320
ATLANTA ~ In a recent announcement, Governor Brian P. Kemp and the Georgia Department of Revenue (DOR) revealed that the state has officially begun issuing special tax refunds to eligible taxpayers. This one-time refund, authorized by HB 1000 during the 2026 legislative session, is the fourth of its kind under Governor Kemp's leadership and is expected to return over $1 billion to Georgia taxpayers.
According to Governor Kemp, this refund is a testament to the state's commitment to maintaining a balanced budget and putting money back into the hands of its citizens. "Georgians know best how to spend their money, not the government," he stated. "That's why we're committed to being good stewards of those dollars and putting more of them where they belong - in Georgians' pockets - at a time when other states are having to raise taxes."
This special refund follows previous ones issued in 2022, 2023, and 2025. To be eligible for this refund, taxpayers must have filed both their 2024 and 2025 individual income tax returns before the filing deadline, have paid into the system, and not owe any money to the State Department of Revenue. The amount of each individual's refund will depend on their tax liability and is capped at $250 for single filers and married individuals filing separately, $375 for head of household filers, and $500 for married individuals filing jointly.

DOR Commissioner David Burge assured taxpayers that his team is prepared to efficiently and securely deliver these refunds. "We've built a process that prioritizes accuracy and speed so eligible filers can receive their money as quickly as possible," he stated.
Taxpayers can check their eligibility using the Surplus Tax Refund Eligibility Tool available through the Georgia Tax Center. By entering their tax year, Social Security Number or Tax Identification Number, and Federal Adjusted Gross Income, individuals can determine if they are eligible for the refund.
For more information, including Frequently Asked Questions and refund tracking, taxpayers can visit the DOR website at https://dor.georgia.gov/georgia-surplus-tax-refund. The state urges eligible taxpayers to take advantage of this opportunity and put their hard-earned money back into their own pockets.
