Florida: Governor Ron DeSantis Awards Over $29 Million for Biscayne Bay Water Quality Improvement Projects and Coral Reef Restoration
Rezul News/10722443
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. ~ TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Governor Ron DeSantis has announced a total of $29.5 million in funding for projects aimed at improving water quality in Biscayne Bay and restoring Florida's Coral Reef. The funds will be distributed across eight projects through the Biscayne Bay Water Quality Improvement Grant Program and 11 projects through the Florida Coral Reef Restoration and Recovery Initiative (FCR3).
During a press conference in Miami, Governor DeSantis emphasized the importance of protecting and preserving Florida's waterways for future generations. "To-date, my administration has awarded over $3.5 billion to over 1,000 local projects aimed at protecting Florida's water resources," he stated. "Now, we are building on those historic investments to ensure that our state's natural treasures are preserved for generations to come."
The Biscayne Bay Water Quality Improvement Grant Program aims to reduce harmful nutrients in the bay through various projects such as wastewater improvements, stormwater management, and other initiatives that support anticipated population growth while improving water quality.

Florida Department of Environmental Protection Secretary Alexis A. Lambert highlighted the significance of these investments in revitalizing Biscayne Bay. "Biscayne Bay is Florida's largest estuary and home to an array of important species of plants and wildlife," she said. "By making strategic investments in the bay's water quality, we are revitalizing waters that support not only our wildlife but also our economy and way of life."
Since taking office, Governor DeSantis has made it a priority to revitalize Biscayne Bay, with a total investment of $90 million since 2019 for targeted water quality projects in the bay. In January 2023, he signed Executive Order 23-06 which established the FCR3 initiative aimed at developing infrastructure and technology necessary for the long-term recovery of Florida's Coral Reef by 2050.
The selected projects for both grant programs were chosen based on their potential impact on scaling up land-based coral propagation infrastructure and capacity, as well as increasing data management capabilities.
