Rezul News/10744015
~ The City of Mesa Transportation Department has reached a major milestone in their efforts to improve energy efficiency and save taxpayer dollars. After a seven-year commitment, the department has successfully completed the installation of LED streetlights throughout the city.

This morning, Mayor Mark Freeman joined a City of Mesa Transportation employee in a two-person bucket truck to install the final LED streetlight in front of the Transportation Administration Building on 300 E. 6th St. This marks the completion of a massive project that began in 2019.

The decision to convert all 46,064 streetlights to LED fixtures was made in-house, resulting in significant savings for the city. It is estimated that this switch will save over 19,250 megawatt hours of electricity per year and over $7 million in taxpayer dollars that would have been spent if the project had been outsourced.

In addition to cost savings, LED streetlights have a longer lifespan which means fewer replacements and less staff time needed for maintenance. The use of smart technology also allows for virtual management through a web-based public lighting system. This innovative approach will not only benefit the city financially but also contribute to a more sustainable future for Mesa.
