Evansville: Mayor Terry Announces METS Fare Collection System Modernization

Rezul News/10729755
March 12, 2026 ~ Evansville, Indiana - The Metropolitan Evansville Transit System (METS) has announced a major step towards modernizing their fare collection system. In a five-year agreement with Matawan, a leader in SaaS mobility platforms, METS will be implementing advanced Account-Based Ticketing (ABT) and Open Payment systems. This move is expected to greatly improve accessibility and equity for the over one million annual METS riders.

According to Todd Robertson, Evansville Transportation and Services Director, the top priority for this modernization was to ensure that no one would be excluded from using the system. Matawan understood this concern and their solution allows for payment via cash, credit, or debit across all 29 buses and 21 routes. This marks a significant milestone in the evolution of city transit.

One of the key features of this project is Matawan's ability to integrate their cutting-edge ABT platform with METS' existing infrastructure. This means that existing fareboxes will still be used and physical cash top-ups can be done through local retail partners. This effectively digitizes cash for those who are unbanked while also accepting standard EMV (credit/debit card) and mobile wallet payments.

The partnership with Matawan also brings other benefits such as a dynamic fare engine that allows for easy implementation of programs like "Free Ride Days" without any major system overhaul. Additionally, riders will never have to pay more than the daily or weekly pass price thanks to the fare capping feature.

Ian Woodroofe, Managing Director North America at Matawan, expressed his confidence in their solution saying, "Our proven and innovative SaaS fare payment platform will enable METS to achieve their goals and improve the user experience." He also emphasized that while digitizing and streamlining operations, they are committed to not leaving anyone behind by ensuring every rider benefits from flexible, fair, and data-driven mobility.

This move puts Evansville at the forefront of regional US transit modernization and showcases how even mid-sized networks can easily pivot to take advantage of new payment platforms. It is a testament to the city's commitment to improving service for their clients.

Matawan, founded in France in 2012, is a global leader in the evolving mobility ecosystem. Their SaaS platform integrates Account-Based ticketing, payment processing, service reliability, and real-time data management to enhance the rider experience and reduce the carbon footprint of every trip. As a trusted partner to local transit authorities and private operators, Matawan works towards providing equitable, accessible, and sustainable transportation for everyone.
