Council Supports Deadly Weapons Collection Program in Boston

~ In response to the recent surge of serious violence in Boston, the Council is taking action to ensure the safety of its residents. The Council has passed a resolution urging the City of Boston and Boston Police Department to implement a deadly weapons collection program.

The resolution, which was prompted by a series of violent incidents this summer, highlights the need for immediate action. These incidents include a fatality at South Station during rush hour on August 12, two stabbings at North Station on August 13, and a fatal stabbing in Dorchester on August 17.

To address these public safety challenges, the Council is looking to other municipalities that have successfully implemented similar programs. Specifically, they point to Cleveland and Lincolnshire, England, where residents have been able to anonymously and safely dispose of knives, firearms, and other bladed weapons through dedicated surrender bins.

According to reports from Cleveland Police, hundreds of knives and firearms have been voluntarily surrendered through their program. Similarly, the Lincolnshire Police Department reported 315 weapons handed in including knives, machetes, knuckledusters, an imitation firearm, a crossbow, an air rifle, and two shotguns.

The resolution also cites analyses and studies that have shown declines in knife- and firearm-related crime as well as emergency department visits following the implementation of similar programs. With this evidence in mind, the Council is confident that implementing a deadly weapons collection program will help reduce violence in Boston and keep its residents safe.
