Council Supports Boston Medical Center Resident Physicians

Rezul News/10747256
~ The Council has adopted a resolution supporting more than 700 resident physicians at Boston Medical Center as they negotiate a union contract.

Represented by the Committee of Interns and Residents, the physicians are seeking fair wages, affordable health care, safe working conditions, adequate time off, and respect in the workplace.

The resolution describes resident physicians as essential to patient care and public health in Boston and beyond. It also notes their role at BMC, New England's largest safety-net hospital, where more than half of patients come from underserved or low-income backgrounds.

According to the resolution, BMC residents face financial strain from the region's high cost of living and student loan debt. They are also the lowest-paid unionized resident physicians in the greater Boston area.

The Council said competitive compensation could help residents do their jobs, reduce burnout, and sustain high-quality patient care.
