Columbia Regional Airport identified as fastest growing airport in US
Rezul News/10731922
(COLUMBIA, MO) ~ Columbia Regional Airport (COU) has been making headlines as it was recently named the fastest-growing airport in the United States for 2026. This news comes after a record-breaking year in 2025, where COU saw a 17% increase in passengers compared to the previous year.
According to an analysis by Mead & Hunt, an industry-leading aviation planning, design, and development firm, COU experienced a staggering 107% increase in seats for the next six months. This growth is a testament to the strength of the community and the rising demand for convenient and reliable air service close to home.
Michael Parks, manager of Columbia Regional Airport, expressed his excitement about this achievement and credited it to the support of the community. "COU's growth reflects the strength of our community and the increasing demand for convenient, reliable air service close to home," said Parks.

To support this rapid growth, the Columbia City Council has approved a series of targeted infrastructure improvements. These enhancements aim to improve the overall passenger experience and accommodate increasing demand. The plan includes adding approximately 600 new parking spaces at the south of the terminal, along with necessary grading, erosion control, and improved access points. These new spaces will be ready just in time for the busy summer travel season. Additionally, there are plans for further parking expansion north of the terminal.
The City is also working on future terminal enhancements that include adding a kitchen and restaurant concept and improving terminal access roads. These investments aim to create a more seamless, comfortable, and convenient experience for travelers while positioning COU for continued growth.
COU's success can be attributed to various factors such as record demand, expanded airline service, and strengthened connectivity through major hubs. In 2025 alone, COU welcomed a record-breaking 242,167 passengers with an increase of 17% compared to the previous year. United Airlines returned with daily nonstop flights to Chicago O'Hare International Airport and Denver International Airport. American Airlines also announced new daily nonstop service to Charlotte Douglas International Airport, offering one-stop access to over 180 destinations.

In addition, Allegiant began offering leisure options with new nonstop service to Orlando/Sanford and Destin-Fort Walton Beach in June 2026. American Airlines also increased total seat capacity at COU by an average of 26% during peak seasons, with a significant increase of 62% in seats to Chicago O'Hare, providing travelers with more schedule flexibility and connectivity through a major hub.
With these impressive numbers and continuous efforts to improve the passenger experience, it is no surprise that COU has been named the fastest-growing airport in the United States for 2026. The airport's success not only benefits the local community but also strengthens its position as a key player in the aviation industry.
