Columbia Police respond to child kidnapping on North Providence Road

(COLUMBIA, MO) ~ Columbia Police officers responded to a call regarding the kidnapping of two young children on December 18th at approximately 3:45 p.m. The incident took place in the 1600 block of North Providence Road, where an adult female was seen driving away with the children, ages 1 and 3, in her vehicle.

Upon receiving the call, Columbia Police immediately issued an Amber Alert in hopes of locating the missing children. The Missouri State Highway Patrol joined in the search and located the vehicle on Interstate 70 near the Higginsville exit around 4:30 p.m. Thankfully, both children were found unharmed and safely recovered.

The suspect, identified as Joy A. Smith, a 24-year-old resident of Columbia, was arrested by Columbia Police officers on charges of two counts of first-degree kidnapping and one count of first-degree tampering.

The Columbia Police Department expressed their gratitude to both the Missouri State Highway Patrol and Boone County Sheriff's Office for their assistance in locating the missing children.

The case has been assigned number 2025-012077 and falls under Missouri statutes for first-degree kidnapping (565.110) and tampering in the first degree (569.080).
