(COLUMBIA, MO) ~ Columbia Fire Department Rescues Dog from Frozen Pond

On Tuesday afternoon, the Columbia Fire Department (CFD) responded to a call for an ice rescue in the 2000 block of Osage Drive. At approximately 2:13 p.m., CFD units were dispatched to the scene where a dog had fallen into a partially frozen residential pond.

Upon arrival, CFD units found a dog stranded approximately 30 feet away from shore. Recognizing the danger, a firefighter equipped with specialized ice rescue gear bravely entered the water and successfully rescued the dog.

The dog, later identified as a chow chow named Bear, was examined and warmed up by CFD firefighters and MU Health Care paramedics. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.

After neighbors were unable to identify the dog, Animal Control was called to assist. They confirmed that Bear had been reported missing earlier in the day and was happily reunited with her family.

A total of three Columbia Fire units, with nine personnel, responded to this incident. The CFD would like to remind residents to exercise caution around frozen bodies of water as temperatures may rise but ice can remain unstable. In case of an emergency involving a person or pet falling through ice, it is important to call 911 immediately and wait for trained professionals to respond.
