Columbia Fire Department responds to residential structure fire, July 5

Rezul News/10739658
(COLUMBIA, MO) ~ Early Sunday morning, the Columbia Fire Department (CFD) responded to a large fire in the 600 block of Tara Lane. The call came in at 4:30 a.m., reporting a blaze at the only structure on the unimproved road, located near Columbia's Hominy Creek Trail.

Upon arrival, the first dispatched company could see a significant amount of smoke coming from the area. However, due to the remote location and limited street access, it was difficult to pinpoint the exact location of the fire. With additional information from 911 callers, other CFD companies were dispatched at 4:40 a.m. and the first firefighter on scene was able to locate the source of the flames within eight minutes.

The fire was located on an unimproved road with a single narrow bridge, making it challenging for fire trucks to reach. Furthermore, there were no fire hydrants in the rural and remote area for firefighters to use as a water source. To assist with this issue, Boone County Fire Protection District (BCFPD) provided a grass fire unit and water tender.

Once crews were able to access the structure, they found a former two-story residence fully engulfed in flames on the ground. Due to extensive damage throughout the home, firefighters immediately began a defensive attack to prevent further spread and contain the fire to its origin.

The main focus of their efforts was protecting nearby wildland areas and limiting damage to the already destroyed structure. Fortunately, there were no occupants inside at the time of the fire and no injuries were reported. A total of 25 fire personnel responded to the scene.

Columbia Fire Marshals were called in to investigate and determine the cause of the fire, which remains undetermined at this time. The CFD would like to extend their gratitude to BCFPD for their assistance during this incident.

As investigations continue into this early morning blaze on Tara Lane, residents are reminded to always have working smoke detectors and to regularly check for potential fire hazards in their homes. The CFD urges the community to take necessary precautions to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.
