Colorado Springs: Refunds being issued to drivers impacted by incorrect speed safety camera fines issued between July 21 and September 1, 2026

~ On September 1, 2026, the Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD) announced that a software update implemented by their Speed Safety Camera (SSC) vendor, Verra Mobility, had resulted in incorrect fines being issued for speeding violations. The update, which was implemented on July 21, 2026, included changes to internal location codes used by the SSC program.

According to CSPD staff, while reviewing citations on September 1st, they discovered that a summons issued in a neighborhood zone had incorrectly listed an $80 fine instead of the correct $40 fine. Further investigation revealed that this issue had affected citations issued at several neighborhood and park locations.

Out of the 1,212 locations included in the system, approximately 2.8% or 34 locations were affected by this technical error. As a result, a total of 2,764 citations issued between July 21st and September 1st displayed an incorrect fine amount of $80 instead of $40.

However, CSPD officers have confirmed that all of these violations were valid and were issued for vehicles traveling at least 11 mph over the posted speed limit. The technical issue only affected the fine amount printed on the citation by Verra Mobility.

It was also revealed that approximately 700 of these affected citations had already been paid through the online portal. To rectify this error and ensure fairness for those who have already paid their fines, Verra Mobility will be issuing refunds of $40 to those who paid the incorrect amount. These refunds are expected to arrive within four to six weeks.

For those who have not yet paid their fines, court records have been updated to reflect the correct amount of $40. This will be reflected when accessing the online payment portal or visiting the court in person.

In order to inform all registered vehicle owners affected by this error, Verra Mobility has begun mailing notification letters. A sample of this letter can be found at the bottom of the press release.

The CSPD also highlighted the concerning number of citations issued during this period, which highlights an ongoing public safety concern. In just six weeks, 2,764 vehicles were documented traveling at least 11 mph over the posted speed limit in neighborhoods and roads adjacent to city parks. The CSPD remains committed to promoting safer driving while maintaining transparency, accuracy, and accountability in their SSC enforcement program.
