Colorado Springs: Driver dies following April 17 crash on East Platte Avenue; Investigation ongoing

On April 17, 2026, the Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD) was notified of a two‑vehicle crash at the intersection of E. Platte Avenue and N. Wahsatch Avenue. Upon arrival, officers learned that a vehicle making an unprotected left turn from westbound E. Platte Avenue onto southbound N. Wahsatch Avenue had been struck by an eastbound vehicle.

The driver of the turning vehicle sustained injuries and was transported from the scene for medical treatment. On April 28, CSPD was notified by the El Paso County Coroner's Office that the transported driver had succumbed to his injuries while at the hospital. He was identified as 83‑year‑old Donald Leibfried.

Due to the circumstances of this crash, the CSPD Major Crash Team was notified and is currently assisting with the investigation. Speed is not suspected to be a contributing factor.

No formal charges have been filed. This remains an open and active investigation.

This incident marks the 17th traffic fatality in Colorado Springs in 2026. At this time last year, the city experienced nine traffic fatalities. Over the past 365 days, there have been 64 traffic‑related fatalities within the city.
