Colorado Springs: City greenhouse opens gates for annual surplus plant sale July 23-25

~ Colorado Springs Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services (PRCS) is gearing up for their annual surplus plant sale, inviting plant lovers, gardeners, and pollinator enthusiasts to the City Greenhouses for one of the most highly anticipated horticulture events of the summer. The event will take place from July 23 to 25 and offers residents the opportunity to take home a wide selection of greenhouse-grown plants while also supporting improvements to the facility.

The City Greenhouses, located at 1003 Glen Ave., will be open for visitors during the following hours: Thursday, July 23 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., Friday, July 24 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., and Saturday, July 25 from 8 a.m. to noon. The sale will feature a variety of greenhouse-grown native plants such as purple coneflower, Rocky Mountain penstemon, blue flax, blanket flower, blackfoot daisy, wild bergamot, little bluestem, blue grama and more. However, plant availability may vary throughout the event.

According to City Horticulturist Alex Crochet, many of the plants grown in the greenhouse are sourced from seeds collected in the Pikes Peak region. This allows for landscapes that are well-suited to Colorado Springs' climate while also preserving the character and ecological health of the community. The annual surplus plant sale provides residents with a unique opportunity to bring these locally grown plants into their own yards and gardens.

A suggested donation of $9 is requested for each one-gallon plant at the sale. These donations will go towards maintaining and improving the greenhouse facility in order to sustain its production of plants for parks and public spaces throughout Colorado Springs. As demand is expected to be high, shoppers are encouraged to arrive early for the best selection. Plants will be available on a first-come, first-served basis while supplies last. Digital payments will be accepted, but cash donations are also welcome. However, change will not be available, so residents are advised to come prepared with a wagon, cart, or helping hands to transport their purchases.

The surplus plant sale is not only a great opportunity for residents to add some beautiful and locally grown plants to their gardens, but it also supports the important work of the City Greenhouses in maintaining and improving the city's public spaces.
