Colorado: Colter Backcountry Selects Steamboat Springs for Expansion with Support from Rural Jump-Start

STEAMBOAT SPRINGS ~ Steamboat Springs, Colorado - In a move that will bring new jobs and strengthen the state's outdoor recreation industry, Colter Backcountry LLC has joined the Rural Jump-Start initiative. The company, which specializes in flyfishing apparel and gear, will be relocating its headquarters to Steamboat Springs.
Governor Jared Polis and the Business Funding and Incentives (BF&I) division of the Colorado Office of Economic Development and International Trade (OEDIT) made the announcement today. Governor Polis expressed his excitement about welcoming Colter Backcountry to Steamboat Springs, stating that "Colorado is the best place to live, work and grow a business." He also highlighted the benefits of the Rural Jump-Start program for innovative businesses across all industries.
Colter Backcountry was founded by brothers Patrick and Daniel Bauman, who were inspired to create ultralight backcountry gear after thru-hiking the 3,100 mile Continental Divide Trail. The company focuses on minimalist versions of essential fly fishing gear using advanced materials. In Steamboat Springs, they will manage product assembly, inventory storage, and order fulfillment.

Patrick Bauman, owner of Colter Backcountry, expressed his enthusiasm for joining the Rural Jump-Start program. He stated that it will help them expand their product line and deepen their roots in the community while continuing to design gear specifically for mountain environments.
The Rural Jump-Start program aims to encourage economic development and job creation in economically distressed rural counties in Colorado. As part of this initiative, Colter Backcountry will receive $15,000 in grant funding to support their launch as well as four years of tax benefits. Eligible employees will also receive a state personal income tax credit while the company is in the program.
Eve Lieberman, Executive Director of OEDIT, highlighted the importance of programs like Rural Jump-Start in supporting local communities and creating new jobs across the state. She also noted that the outdoor recreation industry in Colorado supports over 404,000 jobs, making up 12% of the state's workforce.

The Rural Jump-Start program is made possible through partnerships with organizations like Routt County Economic Development Partnership (RCEDP). John Bristol, Executive Director of RCEDP, emphasized the importance of supporting local businesses and startups for economic diversification and long-term resilience.
