City To Simplify Services by Routing Non-Emergency Police, Fire Calls through Spokane 311

Rezul News/10747316
~ Spokane residents will be able to call 311 for non-emergency police and fire matters beginning Oct. 27, when those calls within city limits move from Crime Check to Spokane 311, the city said.

The change is intended to give people a single number for non-emergency public safety needs and other city services. Spokane 311 already handles service requests and general information, including reports of potholes and unauthorized camping, as well as utility bill payments.

Non-emergency matters that can be reported through 311 include suspicious activity and crimes that are no longer in progress. Calls will be assessed and routed to the appropriate department or emergency personnel, according to the city. Emergencies requiring an immediate police, fire or medical response should still be reported to 911. Calls requiring an emergency response that come in through 311 will be transferred to 911.

Residents should continue calling Crime Check at 509-456-2233 through Oct. 26, the city said. A public education campaign is underway ahead of the change.

The transition is the first of several operational milestones planned over the next two years as Spokane establishes its own Primary Safety Answering Point, or PSAP, the city said. Emergency Communications Director Stephen Williams said the city has invested in technology and is hiring call-takers as it prepares to operate the answering point.

Mayor Lisa Brown said the change is a first step toward an independent emergency communications system and is intended to streamline reporting and make it easier to know where to call for non-emergency help. Spokane 311 Director of Customer Experience Heather Sweet said consolidating the calls is intended to make city services easier to navigate.

The city said it will continue working with SREC and regional public safety partners during the transition to maintain access to 911 and emergency services.
