City of Tacoma Elevates 28-Year South African Sister City Relationship to District-Wide Partnership

~ In a move to strengthen international partnerships, the Tacoma City Council has officially elevated its 28-year Sister City relationship with George, South Africa to a district-wide partnership with the Garden Route District Municipality. This decision was made during the council's meeting tonight, where they adopted Resolution 41869.

The resolution, sponsored by Mayor Anders Ibsen, Council Member Jamika Scott, and Council Member Latasha Palmer, not only solidifies the partnership between Tacoma and George but also removes George's individual Sister City designation. The Garden Route District Municipality is responsible for coordinating seven local municipalities in South Africa and represents over 630,000 residents along the southern coast.

According to the council members, this expanded relationship will focus on various areas such as Port City and maritime trade, tourism, golf and sports diplomacy, jazz, arts and culture, and youth education and development. These areas were chosen as they align closely with the diversity found in Tacoma and Pierce County.
