City of Long Beach to Celebrate Completion of Ramona Park Signature Playground

Long Beach, CA ~ Long Beach, CA - The City of Long Beach has completed the Ramona Park Signature Playground Project, a community effort to enhance safety and inclusivity at the North Long Beach park. The project features a new design with an Under the Sea theme and state-of-the-art play equipment, as well as a shade structure, mister, safety surfacing, and inclusive and sensory play equipment.
The ribbon-cutting ceremony for the playground's completion will take place on Saturday, Oct. 25, 2025 at 10 a.m. at Ramona Park (3301 E. 65th St.). Mayor Rex Richardson, Ninth District Councilmember Dr. Joni Ricks-Oddie, and representatives from the Departments of Parks, Recreation and Marine and Public Works will be in attendance. Following the ceremony, community members are invited to enjoy the new playground.
Mayor Rex Richardson expressed his excitement for the project, stating that it is more than just a beautiful play space but also a symbol of renewal for the community. He emphasized that every upgrade was thoughtfully designed to be inclusive and welcoming for families and children of all abilities.

The playground is an Elevate '28 project and was last renovated in 1997. It features a new design that includes an inclusive play area for children of all ages and abilities. The upgrades also include new shade structures and mister cooling features to reduce heat impacts and create an inviting park environment for all visitors.
In addition to being ADA-compliant with accessible play equipment, curb ramps, pathways, parking stall striping, and signage, the playground also addresses multiple aspects of child development such as physical, social-emotional, sensory, cognitive, and communication skills. These upgrades include sensory elements like a sensory wave seat and babble talk tubes as well as an Under the Sea theme with imaginative play equipment.
Ninth District Councilmember Dr. Joni Ricks-Oddie expressed her excitement for the new playground, stating that it will serve as a vital space in North Long Beach for families to grow, play, and build lasting memories. She also mentioned that as a mother, she is especially excited to bring her own children to enjoy the unique features of the playground.

The Ramona Signature Park Playground was funded by a $1.5 million grant from California State Parks secured by 33rd District California State Senator Lena Gonzalez, former Assembly Speaker Anthony Rendon, and former Assemblymember Patrick O'Donnell through Fiscal Year 2022 State budget surplus. It also received a $550,000 Community Development Block Grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and $650,000 in Measure A funding. Construction for the project began in February 2025 and was completed in October 2025.
Senator Lena Gonzalez expressed her pride in helping secure funding for the project and stated that it is wonderful to see the new playground and green space upgrades come to life for everyone to enjoy.
The Ramona Park Signature Playground Project is part of Elevate '28, a comprehensive five-year infrastructure initiative dedicated to enhancing Long Beach parks, community and public facilities, access to mobility, and street improvements.
