City of Long Beach Issues a Heat Alert and Advises Residents to Take Precautions Against Heat
Rezul News/10741126
Long Beach, CA ~ Long Beach, CA - As temperatures continue to rise in Southern California, Acting City Health Officer Dr. Cliff Okada has issued a Heat Alert for Wednesday, July 22 through Friday, July 24. The National Weather Service is forecasting high temperatures in the upper 80s to low 90s, but with humidity factored in, it could feel as hot as 101 degrees. This increase in heat poses a risk for heat-related illnesses and the community is advised to take precautions.
In response to the Heat Alert, City Parks, Recreation and Marine Community Centers and Long Beach Public Library locations will serve as designated cooling centers during their regular business hours. It is recommended that individuals contact these locations beforehand to confirm their availability in case of unexpected closures.
To further assist the community during this time, the Long Beach Multi-Service Center will extend its hours from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Wednesday through Friday. However, case management services will only be offered until 4 p.m.
While everyone is at risk for heat-related illnesses, older adults, those with chronic illnesses, infants and young children are particularly vulnerable. It is important for individuals to check on friends, family and neighbors who may be home-bound to ensure they are not being affected by the heat.

To stay safe during this Heat Alert, it is recommended that individuals follow these tips:
Stay Cool
- Wear lightweight and loose-fitting clothing.
- Limit outdoor activities to morning and evening hours when possible.
- Seek out air-conditioned spaces or take cool showers or baths during peak heat hours (noon to 6 p.m.).
Hydrate
- Drink plenty of fluids throughout the day; do not wait until you feel thirsty.
- Avoid alcohol, caffeine and sugary drinks as they can contribute to dehydration.
- Replenish lost salt and minerals by consuming sports drinks or salty snacks.
- Ensure that pets have access to water at all times.
- If you have a chronic health condition or are on water pills, consult with your healthcare provider for guidance on staying hydrated.
Protect Against Heat-Related Illness
- Apply sunscreen with SPF 15 or higher at least 30 minutes before going outside and reapply every two hours.
- Wear a wide-brimmed hat to protect your face and neck from the sun.
- Provide shade and water for pets, as hot asphalt can burn their paws.
- Wear sunglasses that offer 100% UVA and UVB protection to prevent cataracts.

- Never leave children or pets in a parked car or in direct sunlight.
Signs of Heat-Related Illness
If someone's temperature rises to 103 degrees Fahrenheit or above, they lose consciousness, experience a fast and strong pulse, or their symptoms last longer than an hour or worsen, it is important to seek medical help immediately. Other signs of heat-related illness include heavy sweating, cold and clammy skin, nausea and vomiting, dizziness, headache, and confusion.
While swimming pools may seem like a refreshing way to cool off during the heatwave, it is crucial to have entry-proof barriers around pools and spas. Additionally, adult supervision should always be provided when children are near water.
