City of Columbia winter weather update, Jan. 24, 8:30 a.m.

(COLUMBIA, MO) ~ COLUMBIA, MO - The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a winter storm warning in effect until 6 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 25. According to the NWS, heavy snow is expected with accumulations between 6 and 12 inches. This warning comes as a cold weather advisory is also in effect until noon Saturday, Jan. 24, with wind chills as low as 20 below zero.

As the winter weather continues to be unpredictable, residents are advised to closely monitor the forecast and changing road conditions throughout the mid-Missouri area. The City of Columbia's various social media accounts will provide updates on the situation, and residents can also visit the City's website for more information.

The City of Columbia Public Works department has taken necessary precautions in response to this weather event. A 28-person snowplow crew reported for duty at 7 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 24 and will work in 12-hour shifts until the end of the storm. Pavement temperatures are expected to remain below freezing throughout the event, making it difficult for salt to be effective. As a result, plowing will be the primary method used to clear roads. Drivers should anticipate slick conditions on all roadways, including those that have been plowed.

Priority routes such as major arterial streets, emergency routes and roads serving critical facilities will be given first attention by the snowplow crews. Residential streets will be addressed after priority routes are consistently maintained in near-normal condition.

To aid in efficient snow removal operations and keep routes accessible for emergency vehicles, parking is prohibited on first and second priority snow routes when accumulation reaches 2 inches or more. Vehicles parked on these routes may be ticketed or towed. Residents can check snow route locations at CoMoSnow.com and sign up for text alerts regarding parking restrictions at Alerts.CoMo.gov.

Jason West from Solid Waste Collection has reported that crews have been out since Saturday morning to finish routes from Friday. If your refuse was not picked up, please report it to the Contact Center online at CoMo.gov/city-managers-office/report-an-issue.

In terms of public health, several warming centers and shelters will remain open regardless of weather conditions. However, it is recommended to check with the location before going as conditions may change. Wilkes Boulevard United Methodist Church will host an overnight warming center from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Jan. 23 through Jan. 25 as a refuge of last resort for those in need. Eligible individuals for overnight shelter at Room at the Inn and/or Salvation Army Harbor House will be directed to these resources if capacity allows.

Animal Control will only respond to extreme emergencies during this weather event, such as a vicious dog running loose, a gravely injured animal or a bat inside a home. Reports can be made by calling 573.449.1888, but response times may be delayed due to road conditions. Residents are advised to bring their pets inside during extreme weather.

As this winter storm continues, unnecessary travel is not advised and residents are encouraged to plan ahead, allow extra travel time and give snowplow crews the space they need to operate safely and efficiently.
