City of Boston to Host First Ever 311 Day
Rezul News/10729484
~ Boston Mayor Michelle Wu and the city's 311 service have announced the upcoming celebration of 311 Day, a nationally recognized day dedicated to thanking constituents for their contributions in keeping Boston running smoothly. The event, which will take place on Wednesday, March 11 from 4:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. at the Mattapan Branch of the Boston Public Library, aims to not only show appreciation for residents but also educate them on the role of the non-emergency hotline in connecting them to city services.
According to Mayor Wu, when Boston residents need assistance or have questions, 311 is often their first call. This vital service acts as a direct connection between communities and City Hall, ensuring that neighborhoods are well-maintained and functioning efficiently. 311 Day provides an opportunity to recognize and thank the team behind this important service while also inviting residents to learn more about how they can utilize it to stay informed and engaged.
Boston 311 is a free service that allows residents to report issues such as broken streetlights, find their trash collection schedule, or get connected with the appropriate city department for assistance. In 2025 alone, Boston 311 received over 290,000 calls and managed more than 470,000 individual cases. The top concerns reported by constituents were parking enforcement with over 60,000 cases, followed by street cleaning (20,245 cases) and trash storage (20,086 cases). Additionally, residents submitted over 145,000 information requests with trash pick-up inquiries being the most common (12,784 requests), followed by nearly 5,000 requests for mattress pick-ups.

During Boston's upcoming 311 Day celebration, attendees will have the opportunity to meet City staff and witness a live demonstration of a typical call received by the hotline. They can also submit real-time requests through the Bos:311 app and learn more about how City services respond through this platform. Free refreshments and giveaways will also be available, and the Mayor's Office of Neighborhood Services neighborhood liaisons will be present to directly connect with constituents.
Irgi Budo, Director of Boston 311, emphasizes that the hotline is not just a means to process requests but also a way to build relationships and solve problems in real-time. He encourages everyone to attend the event and take advantage of the opportunity to meet the team behind 311, receive a branded tote bag, enjoy refreshments, and see how they can work together to keep Boston thriving.
Brianna Millor, Chief of the Community Engagement Cabinet, highlights that events like 311 Day are part of the city's broader effort to bring City Hall out into the community and make it more accessible for residents. This aligns with Mayor Wu's initiative of holding office hours in different neighborhoods to create a welcoming space where residents can meet City staff, ask questions, and receive help navigating services in real-time. By meeting residents where they are, there are more opportunities for direct engagement with City staff and access to services that support everyday needs.
