The $150,000 contribution from Dana-Farber will support specialized screening protocols designed to identify cancer at its earliest stages for 500 firefighters across the city.

This initiative comes as a response to the loss of federal grant support for cancer health screenings, which has impacted the city's efforts to promote health and wellness among its firefighters. According to Boston Fire Commissioner Rodney Marshall, while personal protective equipment and self-contained breathing apparatus provide critical protection, they do not eliminate all exposure to harmful substances. With modern fires burning hotter and producing more toxic fumes, regular screening is necessary to reduce long-term health risks and improve survival outcomes.

United Diagnostic Services, a company specializing in early cancer detection, will lead the screening process and expand cancer screenings across all Boston Fire Department locations. The screenings will include blood and urine testing, as well as low-dose CT scans.

City Councilor Sharon Durkan, who represents District 8, commended Dana-Farber for their commitment to taking care of Bostonians. She stated that when federal grant funding ended, they could not afford to wait for a solution and are grateful for Dana-Farber's visionary leadership in helping them meet this challenge.
