City of Boston Celebrates National Apprenticeship Week

~ Boston Mayor Michelle Wu and the Worker Empowerment Cabinet have officially declared April 26 - May 2, 2026 as National Apprenticeship Week in the city. This proclamation highlights the importance of Registered Apprenticeship Programs (RAP) in boosting the economy by developing a highly skilled workforce and creating opportunities for career seekers to enter in-demand jobs.

Mayor Wu expressed her support for apprenticeships, stating that they provide real pathways to success for Boston residents while also helping industries grow. She also commended the Worker Empowerment Cabinet for their leadership and collaboration in expanding these programs throughout the city.

National Apprenticeship Week is a nationwide celebration that brings together employers, apprentices, graduates, industry representatives, labor organizations, community-based organizations, workforce partners, educational institutions, and government agencies to showcase registered apprenticeships. These programs have been proven to be a cost-effective way for employers to train their future workforce and access a larger pool of skilled workers, ultimately meeting industry demands and reducing unemployment rates.

For workers, RAPs are considered the gold standard for providing quality pathways to good jobs without requiring an advanced degree. In fact, Boston is home to 47 apprenticeships and currently trains 4,000 apprentices – accounting for 41% of all apprentices trained in Massachusetts.

Chief of Worker Empowerment Trinh Nguyen emphasized how registered apprenticeships can break down barriers to employment by allowing workers to gain valuable skills and knowledge while earning a paycheck. This puts them on a path towards upward economic mobility. Nguyen also noted that Boston leads the state in apprenticeship programs and that the Worker Empowerment Cabinet is proud to support innovation in the city's workforce ecosystem and expand this model in key industries. Together with their partners, they will continue creating pipelines to family-sustaining jobs and expanding opportunities across communities.

To celebrate National Apprenticeship Week, the Worker Empowerment Cabinet will be hosting an Apprenticeship Fair on Tuesday, April 28 from 3:30-6 p.m. at the Bruce C. Bolling Municipal Building in partnership with the Boston Public Library. The fair will feature several industries, including Hospitality, Healthcare, Life Sciences, Construction, and Clean Energy. Seventeen organizations will be in attendance, including the Franklin Cummings Institute of Technology, Fisher College, BEST Hospitality, Boston EMS, IBEW Local 103, YMCA, Division of Apprenticeship Standards, Opticians Association of Massachusetts, YouthBuild Boston, Greater Boston Plumbing Contractors Association | Local 12, Center for Working Families, Boston Public Library, Sheet Metal Workers Union Local #17, Office of Labor Compliance and Worker Protections, Heat and Frost Insulators Local 6 JATC , Neighborhood Villages and the Boston Resident's Jobs Policy.
