Chicago: Mayor Brandon Johnson Statement On Trump Administration Restricting Housing And Healthcare For LGBTQ+ Community
Rezul News/10723361
CHICAGO ~ Chicago Mayor Denounces Trump Administration's Policies on LGBTQ+ Housing and Healthcare
In response to recent policy changes made by the Trump administration, Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson has issued a statement condemning the decision to restrict access to housing and healthcare for LGBTQ+ individuals. The policy change, which affects the US Department of Housing and Urban Development's Continuum of Care (CoC) program, will prevent hospitals and providers that offer gender-affirming care from receiving Medicare and Medicaid funding.
Mayor Johnson called the move a "blatantly dehumanizing attack" that will endanger thousands of lives. He stated that these decisions strip Chicagoans and their families of agency over their own healthcare decisions and have far-reaching implications beyond just the LGBTQ+ community.
According to the mayor, up to 4,000 Chicagoans will become homeless or housing insecure as a result of this decision. The city will also lose up to 270 housing units and 30 full-time jobs due to funding cuts. This comes at a time when Chicago is already facing a housing crisis, making these decisions even more detrimental.

The mayor also expressed concern over the decision to restrict Medicare and Medicaid funding for institutions that offer healthcare for transgender youth. He warned that this could lead to service reductions, staffing losses, and higher costs at local hospitals when families are already struggling with rising healthcare costs.
Mayor Johnson emphasized that these policies are not only anti-science but also anti-human. He reaffirmed his commitment to supporting the LGBTQ+ community through initiatives like Protecting Chicago. Under this program, his administration will work with advisory councils, community partners, and advocates to coordinate a citywide response that protects access to essential healthcare for all Chicagoans.
In conclusion, Mayor Johnson's statement serves as a strong denouncement of the Trump administration's policies on LGBTQ+ housing and healthcare. He urges the government to reconsider these decisions in order to protect vulnerable communities in Chicago and across the country.
