CHICAGO ~ Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson has issued a statement in response to the joint agreement signed by Chicago Public Schools and the Chicago Teachers Union to declare May 1 as a day of civic action. The agreement aims to allow school communities to participate in commemorating International Workers Day.
According to Mayor Johnson, schools will remain open for instruction on this day, but multiple opportunities will be provided for those who wish to take part in the civic action both inside and outside of the classroom. He believes that encouraging participation will not only honor the city's history but also advocate for its future.

The mayor also highlighted the significance of May Day in America, stating that it has its roots in Chicago. He mentioned how workers in the city organized for an eight-hour workday and raised awareness about labor rights through the Haymarket Strike.
Mayor Johnson assured that all city agencies and departments are working together to ensure a safe and impactful May Day. He hopes that this day will be a symbol of solidarity and community resistance against forces trying to divide them.
