Chicago: Mayor Brandon Johnson Introduces New Missing Middle Housing Homes in West Garfield Park

CHICAGO ~ Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson has introduced new ordinances to the City Council that will aid in the development of eight new homes in West Garfield Park. This initiative, known as the Missing Middle infill housing program, is part of Mayor Johnson's efforts to increase affordable housing options and promote community stability.

The proposed $3.1 million project, led by Eleve West LLC, will transform four vacant lots on the 4000 block of W Jackson Boulevard into four two-flat buildings. These homes will be available for purchase by working families in the neighborhood, providing them with the opportunity to own a home in an area they love.

Mayor Johnson stated, "Working families should have the opportunity to own a home in the neighborhoods they love, and that means making the investments needed to turn that goal into a reality." He believes that this initiative will not only provide affordable housing options but also help residents build wealth and establish long-term roots in their communities.

The City will provide up to $150,000 in financial assistance for each unit through Mayor Johnson's $1.25 billion Housing and Economic Development Bond. Additionally, the four vacant lots will be sold to the developer for only $1 each.

The Missing Middle initiative is being led by the Chicago Department of Planning and Development (DPD) and focuses on constructing market-rate housing on vacant City-owned land in areas that have experienced disinvestment over several decades. The program aims to restore housing types such as two-flats and other small-scale residential buildings that have become less common in Chicago's neighborhoods.

One of the requirements for this project is that each completed structure must be sold to at least one owner-occupant. This supports Mayor Johnson's goal of helping residents build community wealth and establish long-term roots in their neighborhoods.

Currently, there are over 300 homes under construction or in the pipeline through the Missing Middle initiative. Mayor Johnson remains committed to expanding Chicago's housing supply and creating more pathways to homeownership for working families. He believes that investments like the Missing Middle initiative will strengthen neighborhoods, support long-term community stability, and provide more opportunities for Chicagoans to build wealth and a future in their communities.
