Chicago: Mayor Brandon Johnson, DFSS Announce Record-Breaking Number of Youth Employment Opportunities, Bringing Total to More Than 32,498 Paid Opportunities

CHICAGO ~ Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson and the Chicago Department of Family and Support Services (DFSS) have announced a groundbreaking investment in the city's youth. This investment will create over 32,000 paid opportunities for young people through the expansion of Chicago Youth Works and the launch of the Career Exploration & Employment Preparation Program (CEEP).

Mayor Johnson expressed his commitment to investing in the city's young people, stating that his administration is dedicated to providing opportunities for them to gain experience, earn a paycheck, and build a brighter future. He emphasized that it is important to never leave young people behind and to continuously seek ways to create more opportunities for them.

This historic milestone was made possible through two major investments that aim to expand access to employment, workforce training, and career pathways for young Chicagoans. DFSS Commissioner Angela Green highlighted the potential of Chicago's youth and stated that it is their responsibility to ensure they have access to opportunities, resources, and support systems that allow them to thrive.

Through partnerships with community organizations across Chicago, the City will be creating over 2,000 additional paid opportunities through Chicago Youth Works during these final weeks of summer break. This expansion will provide thousands more young people with hands-on work experience, professional mentorship, and valuable workplace skills while also earning a paycheck.

In addition to this expansion, DFSS recently launched CEEP which aims to provide pre-apprenticeship services, job skills training, career readiness, and job placement support for 1,500 young adults aged 18-24. While Chicago Youth Works focuses on immediate paid employment opportunities, CEEP extends the City's investment beyond the summer by preparing young adults for long-term careers through workforce training and connections to career-path employment.

The City would like to thank its community partners who have committed themselves to serving Chicago's youth through this expansion of Chicago Youth Works. These organizations include Prime For Change, Phalanx Family Services, Ethiopian Community Association of Chicago, Inc., True Believers Community Connections, UCAN, Urban Male Network, B.U.I.L.D. Incorporated, Central States SER, Jobs for Progress, Inc., Brighton Park Neighborhood Council, Metropolitan Family Services, Youth Outreach Services, After School Matters, and Urban Initiatives.

Together, these investments will expand access to meaningful employment and career pathways for young Chicagoans. The City remains dedicated to creating and expanding opportunities for advancement that will help young people reach their full potential.
