Chicago: Mayor Brandon Johnson, Department of Planning and Development Announce Spring Purchase Opportunities for Vacant City Lots
Rezul News/10731365
CHICAGO ~ Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson and the Department of Planning and Development (DPD) have announced that over 600 vacant city lots will be available for private purchase starting on April 1st. This includes 30 parcels in West Englewood and South Chicago for Missing Middle housing, as well as a 2.6-acre site in Austin that has the potential to support up to 140 new homes.
Mayor Johnson stated, "As we continue to confront the housing crisis head-on, my administration is leveraging City resources to create new homes for Chicagoans. By making underutilized and vacant land available for residential construction and other uses, we are creating pathways to make housing more affordable while increasing availability citywide."
These lots, valued at $34 million, span across 25 wards in the city and can be viewed on the ChiBlockBuilder.com land sale portal. The portal provides an interactive map with information on market values, sizes, and potential uses for each available location.
DPD Commissioner Ciere Boatright added, "These parcels offer unique opportunities for buyers to take ownership of their neighborhoods and contribute to local development goals. This spring's inventory is the largest being offered since ChiBlockBuilder launched in 2022."

Out of the 600 lots, approximately 500 are available at market rates for new construction projects, while 55 are designated for affordable housing through the Department of Housing's City Lots for Working Families program. Additionally, there are 66 lots available for side yards, open space, and urban agriculture.
The Missing Middle lots are being offered in five clusters along 69th Street in West Englewood and along South Baker and Buffalo Avenues in South Chicago. These lots can accommodate owner-occupied residential buildings with up to six units. They will also include up to $150,000 in construction assistance per unit and will be sold for $1 each.
The Austin site is being offered for redevelopment as townhomes and multi-family buildings. It consists of 47 lots, making it one of the largest contiguous development sites on the far West Side. The location is within walking distance to the CTA's Laramie Green Line station, the Madison Street retail corridor, and other nearby neighborhood amenities.
Interested buyers must submit their purchase applications within 45 or 90 days, depending on the location. The City's vacant lot inventory currently includes about 7,000 available properties, many of which were acquired through demolition liens over the last 50 years.
For more information on these available lots, visit ChiBlockBuilder.com, Chicago.gov/MissingMiddle, and Chicago.gov/RFPs. This is a great opportunity for individuals and developers to contribute to the growth and development of Chicago's neighborhoods while also addressing the housing crisis in the city.
