Chicago: Mayor Brandon Johnson, CDPH Announce $600,000 Community-Centered Wellness Microgrant Program

CHICAGO ~ Chicago Mayor Announces Launch of Community-Centered Wellness Microgrant Program

Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson and the Chicago Department of Public Health (CDPH) have announced the launch of a new program aimed at improving access to health services and resources for Chicago residents. The Community-Centered Wellness Microgrant Program, with a $600,000 investment, will support local organizations in hosting community-based wellness fairs.

The program will prioritize communities experiencing lower life expectancy and those where residents face barriers to accessing care. By the end of the program period in November 2027, it aims to reach over 22,800 Chicago residents.

According to Mayor Johnson, "Good health starts with having access to the resources, services and support you need in your own community." He believes that by investing in trusted local partners and community-led solutions, they can make it easier for residents to access the care they need and help build a safer and healthier Chicago for all.

SGA Youth & Family Services has been selected as the Lead Coordinating Organization to administer the program. They will be awarded $600,000 to operate the microgrant program. Community-based organizations across Chicago will be able to apply for funding to plan and deliver health and wellness events in their neighborhoods.

Dr. Garth Walker, CDPH Commissioner, stated that "Every Chicagoan should have access to the care and support they need to live a thriving, healthy life." He believes that this investment will help achieve their goal of closing the life expectancy gap across Chicago by creating wellness activities that respond to resident needs.

Through this program, participating organizations will host community-based wellness fairs that provide non-clinical health services, education, and resources. These events may include screenings for blood pressure and cancer; nutrition education; exercise activities; workshops on social and economic factors affecting health outcomes; among others. The aim is also to create pathways that connect residents with ongoing support services.

SGA Youth & Family Services CEO, Martha Guerrero, expressed their pride in serving as the delegate agency supporting community-based organizations. She believes that through their Cycle of Opportunity, they can make a meaningful and lasting impact on individuals and families across Chicago.

The Community-Centered Wellness Microgrant Program reflects CDPH's continued investment in community-driven public health efforts. It recognizes that involving communities in identifying local needs and addressing them is crucial for effective health promotion.

The program will offer two funding cycles, with the first one opening on Monday, August 17, 2026. Applications will be accepted until Wednesday, September 9, 2026. A pre-proposal webinar will also be held on Tuesday, August 25, 2026, to provide prospective applicants with an overview of the program and application process.

This new initiative by Mayor Johnson and CDPH aims to improve the overall health and well-being of Chicago residents by empowering local organizations to bring essential health resources directly into their communities.
