California: Governor Newsom proclaims Workers' Memorial Day
Rezul News/10733395
~ Sacramento, CA - As Caltrans holds its annual Workers Memorial, Governor Gavin Newsom has declared April 28, 2026 as "Workers' Memorial Day" in honor of the 195 workers who lost their lives while working on California's highways. In a proclamation issued today, Governor Newsom also ordered flags to be flown at half-staff over the State Capitol, Capitol Annex Swing Space, and all Caltrans buildings.
The proclamation recognizes the sacrifices made by workers in various industries and reaffirms the state's commitment to ensuring safe and healthy working conditions for all workers. It also highlights California's history of championing important safeguards and rights for workers, such as being the first state to adopt an Injury and Illness Prevention Program standard in 1991.
In recent years, California has taken significant steps to protect workers' rights and improve working conditions. This includes implementing strong public health standards and addressing issues such as unfair pay practices and unsafe production quotas for warehouse and garment industry workers. The proclamation also emphasizes that all workers in California are protected regardless of their immigration status.

Governor Newsom acknowledges that these efforts would not have been possible without the leadership of workers who have spoken out and advocated for safer conditions for themselves and their colleagues. As the state pays tribute to fallen workers on Workers' Memorial Day, Governor Newsom urges everyone to recommit to supporting the welfare of the workforce and ensuring healthy and safe workplaces for all Californians.
The press release also mentions other recent news from Governor Newsom's office, including the announcement of 38 new film projects coming to California from major production companies like DreamWorks Animation and Paramount Pictures. Additionally, several appointments were announced by Governor Newsom today, including Nicole Elliott as a member of the California Water Commission.
In celebration of Earth Day, Governor Newsom also announced a plan to create three new state parks in response to federal threats against conservation efforts. This initiative, called State Parks Forward, aims to expand access to outdoor spaces for Californians.
As Governor Newsom continues to prioritize the well-being and rights of workers in California, the state remains committed to creating a safe and supportive environment for all workers. With the proclamation of Workers' Memorial Day, the sacrifices and contributions of workers are recognized and honored.
