California: Governor Newsom proclaims LGBTQ Pride Month
Rezul News/10739034
~ Governor Gavin Newsom of California has declared June 2026 as "LGBTQ Pride Month" in a proclamation issued today. The governor's proclamation recognizes the contributions and struggles of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) community and celebrates their pride in who they are and whom they love.
In his proclamation, Governor Newsom acknowledges the long history of LGBTQ individuals in California and their role in shaping the state's progress. He highlights key moments of resistance and resilience, such as the Stonewall uprising in New York 57 years ago, where LGBTQ leaders fought against police harassment. The governor also recognizes the significant contributions of LGBTQ individuals in various social movements, including civil rights, women's rights, and labor organizing.
While acknowledging that California has not always had a perfect record when it comes to LGBTQ rights, Governor Newsom emphasizes the community's determination to push back against discrimination and demand progress. He mentions key victories such as defeating the Briggs Initiative – which sought to ban gay individuals from teaching in public schools – and fighting for marriage equality.

However, Governor Newsom also acknowledges that the fight for equality is far from over. He notes that more than one in five hate crimes are motivated by anti-LGBTQ bias and that transgender individuals – particularly Black transgender women – face disproportionate levels of violence. The governor also highlights the current hostile federal administration's attempts to roll back LGBTQ rights.
In light of these challenges, Governor Newsom reaffirms California's commitment to standing with the LGBTQ community. He proudly raises the rainbow flag over the State Capitol as a symbol of solidarity and promises to continue working towards a better and safer future for all.
The governor's proclamation comes on the heels of several other recent announcements related to appointments and budget agreements. On June 26th alone, Governor Newsom announced appointments for Deputy Secretary for Rail and Transit at the California State Transportation Agency and 14 Superior Court Judges. He also announced a balanced budget agreement for the 2026-27 fiscal year that includes funding for small business tax cuts, free school meals, universal pre-school, and healthcare.
In conclusion, Governor Newsom's proclamation of "LGBTQ Pride Month" serves as a reminder of the LGBTQ community's resilience and contributions to California's history. It also reaffirms the state's commitment to standing with and fighting for the rights of all individuals, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity.
