California: Governor Newsom proclaims Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month
Rezul News/10730539
~ Sacramento, CA - Governor Gavin Newsom has declared March 2026 as "Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month" in California. In a proclamation issued today, the Governor recognizes the contributions of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities to the state's diverse communities.
The proclamation highlights California's efforts over the past decade to provide resources and support for nearly 500,000 people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The state is the only one that offers developmental services as an entitlement and prioritizes home and community-based care over institutional settings. Additionally, California has invested in education and passed laws to encourage earlier career planning for those with disabilities, as well as ending sub-minimum wage practices.
Governor Newsom also acknowledges the Master Plan for Developmental Services: A Community Driven Vision, which aims to create a more accountable, transparent, and person-centered developmental disability services system. This plan recognizes the interconnectedness of various health and social systems and seeks to strengthen bridges between them. The state is also working on centralizing service provider information in a directory to make it easier for families to access services.

"We are taking a whole-of-government approach, driven by communities themselves and delivered in partnership with the private sector, to create a more equitable, person-centered, and data-driven developmental services system," said Governor Newsom.
The Governor's proclamation also celebrates the value and contributions of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities to California. It calls for continued efforts across sectors and disciplines to ensure that all Californians with these disabilities can thrive in their neighborhoods and communities.
In addition to this proclamation, Governor Newsom has been busy making other announcements this month. He recently inducted the 19th class of the California Hall of Fame, which includes leaders in athletics, civil rights, culinary arts, and entertainment. The state has also fast-tracked over 300 wildfire safety projects within 300 days since declaring a state of emergency last year.
As California continues to prioritize the inclusion and support of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, Governor Newsom's proclamation serves as a reminder of the state's commitment to breaking down barriers and promoting a more inclusive society.
