California: Governor Newsom proclaims AmeriCorps Week
Rezul News/10729579
~ Sacramento, CA - Governor Gavin Newsom has declared March 9 through March 13, 2026 as "AmeriCorps Week" in California. This proclamation comes as a recognition of the vital role that AmeriCorps members and volunteers play in serving local communities.
In a press release issued today, Governor Newsom stated that America is built on service and throughout history, people have stepped up to meet challenges faced by the country. He emphasized the importance of volunteering in forging connections within communities and laying the foundation for a strong nation.
AmeriCorps is a national service program that engages thousands of Californians annually to address local needs such as education, food insecurity, healthcare, and disaster relief. The California branch of AmeriCorps is the largest in the country and is supplemented by other state service programs such as the California Climate Action Corps, College Corps, and Youth Service Corps.

Governor Newsom also highlighted the significant role that AmeriCorps played during the Los Angeles wildfires in 2025. He reaffirmed California's commitment to service and standing alongside AmeriCorps members and volunteers at a time when national service programs are facing uncertainty and proposed federal reductions.
The governor stressed that national service is not only an investment in communities but also in economic opportunity and civic engagement. He expressed pride in California's tradition as a leader in service, innovation, and collective responsibility.
AmeriCorps Week serves as an opportunity to recognize the dedication and commitment of millions of Americans who have chosen to serve their communities through AmeriCorps and AmeriCorps Seniors. Governor Newsom encouraged more Californians to follow their footsteps in service.
The proclamation was signed by Governor Newsom on March 7th with Secretary of State Shirley N. Weber attesting it. In his closing statement, Governor Newsom urged all Californians to join him in celebrating "AmeriCorps Week" and honoring the contributions of AmeriCorps members and volunteers.

This proclamation comes on the heels of another recent news announcement by Governor Newsom and California Attorney General Rob Bonta. They announced the successful rescue of 37 missing children during a human trafficking operation in Riverside County. The governor also highlighted the efforts of California Highway Patrol officers in recovering over 33,000 stolen goods in organized retail crime sting operations so far in 2026.
Governor Newsom also took a swipe at former President Trump for his lack of accountability and plan in launching military strikes on Iran, resulting in increased gasoline prices for Americans. He emphasized that these prices are set in the global market and wars have a direct impact on them.
As California continues to prioritize service and community engagement, Governor Newsom's proclamation serves as a reminder of the importance of national service programs like AmeriCorps and their impact on local communities.
