California: Governor Newsom extends emergency short-term housing protections in Los Angeles
Rezul News/10706822
~ In a move to continue supporting the rebuilding efforts in Los Angeles, Governor Gavin Newsom has extended his executive order to make it easier for survivors of the LA firestorms to retain temporary shelter. The order, which was first issued on March 7, 2025, has now been extended until October 1, 2025.
The governor's executive order aims to boost the availability of short-term housing by suspending rules that could deter hotels, motels, and other short-term rentals from offering shelter to survivors for more than 30 days. This allows survivors to remain classified as short-term occupants rather than tenants when they stay beyond 30 days.
Governor Newsom stated, "California has removed red tape and cut bureaucratic barriers to help the Los Angeles area recover. We will continue to support the rebuilding of Los Angeles by ensuring that those who have lost their homes have adequate access to temporary housing."
This extension of the executive order is just one of the many steps taken by Governor Newsom to fast-track rebuilding efforts in the aftermath of this year's firestorms. He recently announced a new AI tool that will speed up the approval of building permits and also issued an executive order to streamline the rebuilding process by suspending permitting and review requirements under the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) and the California Coastal Act.

To further cut red tape and provide relief for survivors, Governor Newsom also signed an executive order removing barriers, extending deadlines, and providing critical regulatory relief. He also launched Engaged California, a platform that allows Californians to share their thoughts and connect with others on important topics related to recovery efforts.
The governor urges Californians to practice safety and common sense when using fireworks this Fourth of July. Those who resort to using illegal fireworks will be held accountable.
In addition to these efforts, Governor Newsom signed a balanced state budget that includes tax cuts for military retirees, universal pre-kindergarten for all, expanded before and after school programs, and free school meals for all children. These investments will also create jobs and provide game-changing literacy and reading programs.
Californians can track the progress of LA's recovery at CA.gov/LAfires. The governor's executive orders, along with his commitment to cutting red tape and providing support for survivors, demonstrate his dedication to helping the Los Angeles community rebuild and recover from the devastating firestorms.
