California: Governor Newsom announces clemency actions
Rezul News/10731706
~ SACRAMENTO - In a press conference today, Governor Gavin Newsom announced that he has granted 5 pardons and 3 commutations. These clemency actions were recommended by a diverse group of individuals, including elected officials, correctional staff, medical professionals, teachers, and community and faith leaders.
Clemency is a recognition of an individual's rehabilitation and accountability after a conviction. It serves as an incentive for good behavior and is an essential part of any successful justice system. The Governor carefully considers various factors in clemency cases, such as the applicant's self-development since the offense, the impact on public safety, and the effect on the community, including crime victims and survivors.
Pardons acknowledge an individual's successful reintegration into society after a conviction. They can remove barriers to employment and public service and restore civic rights and responsibilities. On the other hand, commutations recognize exceptional post-conviction rehabilitation by modifying sentences to make the individual eligible for a parole hearing at an earlier date.

At these hearings, parole commissioners consider input from crime victims and survivors as well as district attorneys to determine if the person can safely be released into the community on parole. The Board of Parole Hearings' expertise has resulted in a low recidivism rate for those released following a parole hearing.
The Governor's Office encourages victims, survivors, and witnesses to register with CDCR's Office of Victims and Survivors Rights and Services to receive information about an incarcerated person's status. For more information about victim services or to register or update registration confidentially, individuals can visit their website or call 1-877-256-6877 (toll-free).
Since taking office, Governor Newsom has granted a total of 276 pardons, 169 commutations, and 43 reprieves. More information about the clemency process is available on their website.
In other news from the Governor's Office, California has turned on the nation's largest public broadband network, connecting its first rural community to fast, reliable, and affordable internet. This achievement is a significant step towards bridging the digital divide in the state.

Additionally, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission has approved Diablo Canyon Power Plant's operating license renewals, fulfilling a promise made by Governor Newsom in 2022 to prevent the plant from closing prematurely. Under California law, the plant is required to close by 2025 unless it can demonstrate that it is necessary for grid reliability and greenhouse gas reduction goals.
Lastly, California's aerospace industry has played a crucial role in NASA's historic Artemis II Mission. With contributions from over 500 companies and 16,000 workers, California is the largest state-level contributor to this mission. As NASA sends astronauts on a lunar mission, California's nation-leading aerospace industry continues to drive innovation and progress in space exploration.
Overall, these recent developments showcase Governor Newsom's commitment to promoting rehabilitation and accountability in the justice system while also prioritizing advancements in technology and clean energy for the state of California.
