~ California Celebrates 129 New CHP Officers Ready to Protect and Serve the Golden State
On February 6, 2026, California Highway Patrol (CHP) celebrated the graduation of 129 cadets from the CHP Academy in West Sacramento. These new officers have completed six months of rigorous training and are now equipped with the knowledge and skills to serve and protect communities across California.
Governor Gavin Newsom joined in the celebration, congratulating the graduates for their dedication, courage, and willingness to serve the state. He stated, "These new officers represent the future of public safety in California. I'm grateful for your commitment to protecting all Californians."
CHP Commissioner Sean Duryee also commended the graduates, reminding them that their badge is on loan from the people of California and they must earn the right to wear it every day through professionalism, ethical conduct, and accountability.
The six-month academy training included intensive instruction in traffic enforcement, crash investigation, defensive tactics, firearms proficiency, emergency vehicle operations, and community policing. The curriculum also emphasized legal authority, ethical decision-making, effective communication, and cultural awareness to prepare officers for the complex demands of modern policing.

The CHP's recruitment initiatives over the past few years have been successful in driving strong interest in law enforcement careers. This includes their "Join the CHP 1000" campaign launched in 2022 and their "Cadets" web series. As a result of these efforts, including today's graduates, over 2,400 officers have been brought on board from January 2022 through February 2026.
In addition to increasing interest in law enforcement careers, there has also been a significant increase in applications over the past four years. In 2022 alone there were 16,077 applications received by CHP. This number has steadily increased each year with a total of 31,250 applications received in 2025.
Governor Newsom also highlighted the CHP's efforts in crime suppression, working alongside local leaders to saturate high-crime areas, hold repeat offenders accountable, and remove weapons and narcotics from the streets. Just last week, the Governor praised the CHP crime suppression teams in San Diego for their successful efforts in making 11,700 arrests, recovering over 6,200 stolen vehicles, and seizing nearly 500 illicit firearms since 2024.
